Abstract

Retrieval techniques in case-based reasoning are usually feature based whilst document retrieval methods are usually word based. In this paper we investigate information retrieval techniques which make use of the structure present in text cases to assist in the retrieval of cases to be used for reasoning. Some formulae for combining evidence from various structural components of the text cases are found to produce improved retrieval over standard whole case methods. As well, some interesting problems in applying full-text retrieval techniques to real case-bases arise and are discussed.
