Abstract

This paper presents numerical investigations into the characteristics of heat transfer from a cylinder in cross flow. Two dimensional Steady State as well as Unsteady RANS (Reynolds-Averaged Navier Stokes) simulations are presented and compared with experimental results from the literature. The effect of various flow field and numerical characteristics upon heat transfer are discussed. Experimental data from the literature is compared with numerical results using a standard k-w turbulence model as well as a k-w model for which the calculation of some turbulent quantities has been modified. Significant improvements upon the prediction of heat transfer were found with the modified k-w turbulence model.
