Abstract

A transient model for the downdraft biomass gasifier, which incorporates the phenomena of biomass drying, pyrolysis, cracking of tars and oxidation of pyrolysis products, has been developed. The model describes the complex physical and chemical processes taking place in the reactor by the use of mass and energy balances, together with information about rates of chemical reactions and physical transport processes. The model is used to predict the gas composition, primary and secondary tar content, and gas and solid surface temperature profiles along the gasifier. Transient temperature profiles for both solid and gas phases are presented. Model predictions agree with experimental data available from the literature.
