Abstract
Metal hydride heat pumps (MHHP) are chemical heat pumps, which do not use conventional refrigerants such as CFCs. Instead they use hydrogen as a working fluid. This paper presents the basic underlying theory and operating principles of an MHHP, this includes characterisation of the thermodynamic properties of metal hydrides and cycle representations on Van't Hoff and pressure-composition-temperature diagrams. The design and operating parameters affecting heat pump performance are also discussed. A performance index for an MHHP, which allows comparison with other systems, is presented. Current research works, research needs, and further developments are also discussed.
