Abstract

The volume of digital medical images generated in hospitals is rapidly growing. The storage, retrieval and management of these images presents a number of technical challenges. The design of current image systems have often imposed performance bottlenecks which have led to less than successful acceptance of the systems by users.

Our design of a medical imaging server decomposes the problem into four components: a communications gateway, medical information database, storage pool and storage pool manager. Each of these components are capable of scaling to support growth in the system workload. A medical industry standard for the communications of images is supported by the server.
